The first ever Durakerb installation continues to stand the test of time
More than twenty years ago, Station Road in Burton, Cheshire became the site of the very first Durakerb installation. What began as an opportunity to demonstrate the performance of recycled polymer kerbing has since grown into a product trusted on highways projects across the UK, with almost one million Duraproducts units now installed.
Completed on Station Road in Burton, overlooking the Dee Estuary and the RSPB reserve, the pioneering scheme became the starting point for Durakerb’s adoption across the UK and Europe. It showed that a lightweight polymer alternative to traditional concrete kerbs could deliver the durability required for highways applications while offering a more sustainable solution.
Solving a rural highways challenge
Located either side of the old railway bridge on the borderline between North Wales and the Wirral, Station Road had long experienced vehicles overrunning the verge, particularly agricultural traffic and parked vehicles.
Around 20 metres of Durakerb was installed on either side of the bridge to provide effective edge protection in an area where conventional solutions would have been more difficult to install and maintain. The project was personally overseen by Duraproducts founder Phil Sutton, helping to prove the concept of recycled polymer kerbing in a live highway’s environment.
Manufactured from 88% recycled and recyclable polymer, Durakerb was designed to offer a lightweight and long-lasting alternative to traditional concrete kerbing. The installation became the first demonstration of the product’s performance and ease of installation.
Twenty years of proven performance
More than two decades later, the original Durakerb installation remains in service, continuing to protect the road edge despite years of regular vehicle overrun from heavy agricultural and domestic vehicles.
The longevity of the installation stands as a testament to the durability of recycled polymer kerbing and highlights how the product has performed in real-world conditions since its installation.
From this quiet country lane beside one of Britain’s most picturesque estuaries, Duraproducts has grown into a nationally recognised supplier of sustainable recycled polymer highways products. Today, Durakerb is specified by local authorities, contractors and developers across the UK, supporting projects ranging from rural roads to major infrastructure schemes.
A milestone worth celebrating
While the Burton project may have been modest in scale, its significance continues to grow. As the first ever Durakerb installation, it marked the beginning of a product range that has transformed the use of recycled polymers in highways infrastructure.
Twenty years on, Station Road remains a source of pride for the Duraproducts team and a reminder that every successful innovation has to start somewhere.
