A sustainable solution for Spinnaker House Extra Care

For the new Spinnaker House Extra Care development, Duradrain – Duraproducts’ recycled, lightweight combined kerb and drainage solution that effectively manages water runoff – was the clear choice.

In a move towards sustainable and efficient infrastructure within newly built UK residential developments, Hauraton, a distributor of Duraproducts, worked with the contractor Thomas Contracting, to facilitate the installation of over 300 meters of Duradrain units across the site.

The Spinnaker House development

Spinnaker House Extra Care, located on Highfield Road South in Birkenhead, Merseyside is designed to offer modern, affordable self-contained apartments for individuals over 55, promoting independent living. Built on the former Rock Ferry High School site, it forms a large part of the wider 20-acre Manor Park development, which also includes 84 new homes and the redevelopment of the Grade II listed Ravenswood House. The project’s commitment to high-quality, sustainable living, coupled with its focus on accessibility and community integration, warranted a need for circular construction materials.

In line with the project’s contemporary vision and the increasing demand for environmentally friendly building practices, Duradrain was selected as the preferred kerb and drainage solution to the development’s surrounding areas.

The decision was driven by Duradrain’s green credentials and its practical benefits during installation. With Duraproducts long being a leader in green construction, Duradrain exemplifies its commitment through its high recycled polymer content, lightweight properties, and remarkably low carbon outputs.

Environmental and operational advantage

The Duradrain units are made special by their lightweight composition sitting under 8kg per unit which translates to minimal energy consumption during transportation and simple installation for site workers. Weighing considerably less than traditional concrete alternatives, each unit can be handled with ease, simplifying the installation process and making it a safer and greener alternative to traditional kerb and drainage systems. This results in a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative, that also enhances site productivity by eliminating the need for heavy lifting and installation machinery.

Beyond its immediate installation benefits, Duradrain boasts an impressive environmental profile. It records a GWP-fossil A1-A3 of 6.44 Kg Co2e (Duradrain EPD  2023) which saves 25% CO2e on a traditional concrete equivalent product and contains up to 58% recycled polymer material in each unit. Furthermore, Duradrain’s hydraulically efficient material and large usable volume ensure that extensive areas can be drained quickly and safely, protecting surfaces by effectively managing run-off along the entire kerb-line.

Manufactured from highly recycled and recyclable polymer units, Duradrain aligns seamlessly with the project’s goals. Additionally, its unlimited end-of-life potential means each unit can be reused, recycled into new products, or even carbon recovered, closing the loop on a circular economy approach.

The choice to use Duradrain at Spinnaker House Extra Care was all about building smarter, cleaner, and greener. Initial feedback confirms that these units made the installation process safer, more efficient, and gentler on the environment, aligning with the bigger picture for Merseyside’s Manor Park development.
