Durakerb and Duradrain support sustainable transport with Milton Road scheme
The Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Milton Road improvement scheme has transformed one of Cambridge’s key transport corridors into a safer and more sustainable route for cyclists, pedestrians, bus users and residents. The project introduced continuous segregated cycleways, upgraded footways, bus priority measures, Copenhagen crossings, improved landscaping and enhanced surface water management.
Duraproducts supported the scheme with Durakerb and Duradrain systems, providing an integrated kerb and drainage solution for a heavily trafficked urban environment. Their combined use delivered robust edge restraint, improved cyclist safety, and efficient long-term drainage across carriageways and cycle lanes.
Delivering integrated urban infrastructure to a challenging environment
Milton Road required infrastructure capable of performing across carriageways, segregated cycle lanes, bus corridors, pedestrian areas, and side road crossings, while accommodating varying levels, transitions, and tight urban constraints.
To meet these demands, Duraproducts supplied both Duradrain and Durakerb. Duradrain provided combined kerb and drainage functionality, reducing the need for traditional gully systems and supporting efficient surface water management. Durakerb delivered durable edge restraint and clear separation between footways, cycleways, and vehicle lanes.
Together, the systems supported the scheme’s goal of improving walking, cycling, and public transport infrastructure, helping to create safer and more accessible routes for residents and commuters.
Positive response from residents and councillors
Throughout construction and following completion, councillors, stakeholders, and residents recognised the long-term benefits the Milton Road improvements. Greater Cambridge Partnership updates thanked residents and councillors for their support during delivery, while stakeholders highlighted the safer crossings, improved cycle provision, landscaping, and accessibility improvements introduced across the route.
Public consultation responses and committee discussions emphasised the importance of safer walking and cycling infrastructure, with local representatives noting improved connections to shops, services, and public transport. Camcycle also referenced Milton Road as an example of a successful collaborative transport scheme that delivered strong outcomes for active travel users.
Why Greater Cambridge Partnership progressed with further schemes
The successful delivery of Milton Road reinforced the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s commitment to sustainable transport investment across the city. The schemes demonstrated how integrated cycle infrastructure, drainage systems, bus priority measures, and public realm improvements could help support healthier travel choices while improving safety and accessibility.
Project feedback, stakeholder engagement and positive use of the completed infrastructure contributed to the progression of additional active travel and Greenways schemes across Greater Cambridge. The Milton Road project in particular became a reference point for collaborative design and high-quality cycling infrastructure.
